Government Regulation and Action

I was thinking resistantly about regulation. what is the proper amount of regulation in hard economic times? I know that most people are probably asking this question a lot lately, but when is regulation it "necessary"? Freedmen thought that the great depression was a result of bad Federal reserve policy. Keyness Thought somehow their was not enough aggregate demand in the economy. And Shumpeter believed their were cycles in the economy that lead to ups and down in the economy according to the level of innovation and demand, he called it "creative destruction". So what causes change? Action. what influences action? Knowledge. And how do we get useful knowledge? Research and augmentation. So what do you think? challenge one of this ideas. What will influence your actions?

  1. This is obviously a relevant topic to be discussing. My father especially has stong views about this. (He believes there needs to be regulation.)

I feel like Capitalism cannot survive with out a little regulation. Otherwise we'd have worse situations than Bernie Madoff. I learned at Covenant that Laisez-Faire (sp?) Capitalism (free of regulation, period) is non-existant. The whole thing should be HOW we regulate, HOW MUCH we regulate, and HOW WELL we regulate. I think the regulation commitees in Washington are doing a very poor job, and there is much corruption going on.

I don't have the cure-all solution, but I do think we need to limit/reduce gov't and do a lot better with smaller regulation (as in actually doing it as opposed to corruption).

Isaac, if you're talking about "Keynesian Economics/Thought" I did look up John Maynard Keynes a little a few weeks ago and found he was bisexual and very crazy in the head. He is considered one (if not the) of the foremost economists of our time, and (don't quote me on this) the Father of Modern Western Economics. That just goes to show you that "evil flourishes when good people do nothing" (paraphrased).

  3. Found a GREAT plan! Check it out:

I believe the answer to fixing the entire American governmental system is hidden in these facts. Read them and decide for yourself.

    Facts About Wal-Mart
Americans spend $36,000,000 at Wal-Mart every hour of every day. This is $20,928 of profit every minute!
Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.
    Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.
Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people, is the world's largest private employer, and most employees speak English.
Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the world.
Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger and Safeway combined and they did this in only 15 years.
During this same period, 31 big supermarket chains sought bankruptcy.
Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.
Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had five years ago.
This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at Wal-Mart stores. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 Billion.)
90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.
    Facts About America's Federal Government
The U.S. Postal Service was established in 1775. They have had 234 years to get it right and it is broke.
Social Security was established in 1935. They have had 74 years to get it right and it is broke.
Fannie Mae was established in 1938. They have had 71 years to get it right and it is broke.
The War on Poverty started in 1964. They have had 45 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each year and transferred to "the poor" and they only want more.
Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965. They have had 44 years to get it right and they are broke.
Freddie Mac was established in 1970. They have had 39 years to get it right and it is broke.
The Department of Energy was created in 1977 to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. It has ballooned to 16,000 employees with a budget of $24 billion a year yet we import more oil than ever before. They had 32 years to get it right and it is an abysmal failure.
The federal government has FAILED in every "government service" it has shoved down our throats while overspending our tax dollars.
And they want Americans to believe they can be trusted with a government-run health care system?
    Here are my comments:

If you want to govern a country, learn to govern a business first.

Before that, learn to govern your house, which actually starts with governing yourself.

If you want to make an impact in the world, encourage your children to start a business. When they are successful, they will be qualified to run for public office. If they get elected, their passive income will continue to support them while they serve the people.

If you don't know where to start but want to learn the basics of economics and how it affects government, read the book How to Understand Economics in 1 Hour.

It will change your perspective and may even change your life.

What I'd really like to see is Wal-Mart's CEOs run for office. In fact, I'm officially challenging each of them to run. I predict that just one of them could turn this country around in less than 10 years.

The first item on the agenda of restructuring leadership would be how to accomplish anything with Congress.

  4. As we know, "The government is like my biceps the more I use them the bigger they get." In the same way I say that the more the government regulates the more powerful it gets. Some might say "If men were angels we wouldn't need government," but I would say that there is a big difference between government and regulation. Regulation is a tool that the government can use and unfortunately it never seems to work.
